Route Browser Help - Google Earth

Google Earth is software provided by Google that runs on Windows, Mac OSX and Linux computers. Google Earth provides a much more interactive ability than their web-based product Google Maps. Like, Google Maps, Google Earth provides a rich set of terrain mapping often down to the house level.

If you do not have Google Earth installed on your computer, you may obtain it for free from:

http://earth.google.com

Route Browser allows you to export your flights to a .KML file that can be read and plotted in Google Earth.

After you have Google Earth installed

To create a .KML file from Route Browser

  • Open your logbook file in Route Browser
  • Choose the menu option Map | Generate Google Earth file.
  • To launch Google Earth, click on the link in the Finished dialog.

To create a .KML with selected routes

  • Open your logbook file in Route Browser.
  • Filter your routes using the Filter Settings.
  • Choose the menu option Map | Generate Google Earth file.
  • To launch Google Earth, click on the link in the Finished dialog.

Working with Google Earth

When Google Earth first opens, you will see a world map image showing your flights. You can zoom into selected trips to see more terrain details.

As you zoom to an endpoint of a trip, you should see the airport:

Folders are created for aircraft, aircraft types and airports. You may check/uncheck various choices to filter the display to just the ones desired.

To zoom into an airport

  • Open the Airports folder under My Routes.
  • Double-click the airport desired with the mouse.
  • The display will zoom into the airport and give you a landing perspective.
